Cloke Plaza Coplon Associates provided site planning and design services in support of a Percent for Art project to develop a focal point in the engineering quadrangle. Dedicated to Paul Cloke, the pioneering dean of the School of Engineering, the site contains a central brick plaza overarched by carbon fiber arches manufactured by the University of Maine’s Advanced Composite Centers. Led by environemtal artist Buster Simpson, the project features by a new fiber optic lighted campanile containing a historic campus bell. Pedestrian desire lines are recognized throug ha new series of pathways and Beddington Road will be closed to through traffic. Sections of the roadbed will be redeveloped with bioswales and infiltration pavers to treat local generated stormwater. Future phases will involve extending these treatment techniques the full extent of Beddington Road.
