Millinocket Heritage Square
Millinocket, Maine
CA was retained by the Katahdin Tourism Partnership to develop a plan for a multi-use public open space at a gateway site in downtown Millinocket. CA led the community in a visioning and programming process to identify desired activities and improvements for the site with the overarching goal to induce additional traffic downtown and encourage small, independent business development. Situated on the corner of Penobscot Ave and Central Street with frontage on Aroostook Ave in downtown Millinocket, the Heritage Square will open the view of the downtown commercial district to passersby, create a community green space in a key location, and dovetail with additional efforts at renewing the heart of the community. The Square features a market area defined by feature paving, multi-function lawn space, pavilion, locally themed play space, panels interpreting the historical and natural history of the town, and seating groves for quiet relaxation. Suggestions for a landmark art installation and light sculpture were illustrated as key parts of the plan with the intention that they be subject of an artist’s completion during final design.
