Mohonk Carriage Roads
New Paltz, New York
Coplon Associates teamed with Barton and Loguidace to develop a restoration and maintenance manual for the 100+ mile Shawangunk carriage road system. Located in the adjoining Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park in New Paltz, New York, the historic broken stone road system was developed by the Smiley brothers in the late 1800s for access to and recreation within their mountainside retreats. Subject to continual use for over a century, many sections of roads have fallen into poor repair. The consultant team developed a detailed assessment of road conditions, plans and details for restoration, vegetation management and restoration of historic vistas and specific guidelines for ongoing maintenance including manpower and equipment and schedules.
